The residence trials were a mechanism of Castilian law that allowed accountability by public officials at the end of their charges. These trials were changing as institutions in american territory were settled and reinventing over time. The case presented in this paper shows the first conflicts that the conqueror of Mexico Hernán Cortés faced and also recreates the effects and consequences of the residence trial.
